This course is lead by instructor Imtiaz Ahmad, a Senior Software Engineer by trade and enthusiastic trainer @ Job Ready Programmer. I stress his credentials because the truth is anyone can teach programming, I could spin up a course right now on Udemy by doing nothing but copying a book that I like, trimming it down and reading the lines. That is not a course, that would be a dictation, and frankly a waste of my time.

What I look for in a course is an instructor whose been out in the flames for a while, gotten burnt, learned his lesson and can now teach me things to look out for. I think the best teachers do this almost instinctively, they’re wisest words seem to come as offhand remarks, quick references, or unintentional tangents peppered throughout the course. These moments where you tear away the veil of student – teacher – computer screen, and you see yourself applying the course in real life. That’s where I get my money’s worth, that is the gold nugget that short of having an apprenticeship I won’t get anywhere else. Imtiaz brings this real life knowledge to you in this course, showing you how you might see things written in the real world, variations in the use of SQL, and how you should write it to best utilize Oracle 12G.

The course itself is large, but it’s just right. I prefer something with decent length and a large density of information but not crushing in length that I need to devote a lifetime. It comes in at 9 and 1/2 hours and contains 32 lectures. Each lesson clocks in at around 20 minutes each which is a little on the long side, but most go so quickly and are so interesting you breeze through it. Depending on your hunger level it’s about a month’s worth of comfortable viewing. I know, I know couldn’t 9 and 1/2 hours be an hour a night for 10 days? No. With this course you find your self pausing, taking notes, and trying it out.

Speaking of trying it out, I usually don’t go for the online-compiler format, like using a codenvy.com, or other Eclipse Che variants, they are usually terribly flawed. Imtiaz went with the Apex.Orcale.com online database platform that is free to use and contains dummy data to use for the lessons. A perfect choice there, works flawlessly, and I never had trouble with the website. It actually is a relief since the database installation and optimization part of becoming a good Oracle DBA are seriously multiple courses unto itself. There is a lot of intricacy to the Oracle Database and how it get it running its best.

The course also has decent amount of problems offered by Imtiaz for you to solve. I actually found these quite enjoyable, and paused to complete each one. It was a good way to take the information he just shared and apply it in a creative way. Something to get those neurons to lock that info in. 🙂

This is a top rate course and I cannot recommend it enough, whether you get it from Imtiaz’s Job Ready Programmer site, join his Master Programmer Certification lesson path, one of his in person courses or from Udemy itself. This is a course that is a must have for anyone venturing into the world of Databases, Cloud Computing, Programming or Computer Science. ENJOY IT !!
